Celebrate JUNETEENTH with groundbreaking of African American Cultural Center on June 17
You are invited to Celebrate JUNETEENTH at the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the City of Austin’s African American Cultural and Heritage Facility at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 17 at 912 E. 11th St.
The African American Cultural and Heritage Facility will house offices, meeting space, reception areas, a dance practice and performance room, and space for two local nonprofits, the Capital City African American Chamber of Commerce and the ProArts Collective.
The complex will include a visitors center housed in the historic Dedrick-Hamilton House. The Dedrick-Hamilton House was owned by Thomas Dedrick, one of the first freed slaves in Travis County. It was built about 1880 and was part of the earliest African American communities in East Austin. The complex will serve as an anchor facility for the African American Cultural Heritage District centered along 11th Street, east of IH 35.
